Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who still considers himself the “elected president” of Cameroon’s October 12, 2025 presidential election, has issued a strong statement of solidarity with the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC) and its leader, Professor Maurice Kamto. This follows the police assault on the party’s headquarters and the encirclement of Kamto’s residence.
Tchiroma condemns what he describes as an illegitimate and violent intervention by security forces, deployed while the MRC was preparing to hold a legal internal convention. He denounces the actions as a “grave and unacceptable violation of freedom of association,” and decries the confinement of Kamto as a form of forced residence.
“These serious acts constitute an unacceptable attack on the individual freedom of Professor Kamto. We condemn them with the utmost firmness,” Tchiroma declared, adding that these abuses come on top of the post-election protest deaths and the “political, moral and security harassment” he claims to face as the “elected President” of Cameroon.
Calling for unity among opposition forces, Tchiroma insists that the Cameroonian people expect “cohesion, courage and a sense of duty” from their leaders. He maintains that the fight for the “truth of the ballot box” remains the only legitimate course, rejecting any attempt to validate the results proclaimed by the Constitutional Council, which declared President Paul Biya—now 92 years old and in power for 43 years—victorious.
“By reaffirming our fraternal solidarity with the MRC and Professor Maurice Kamto, we call on all forces of change to remain united around one objective: the liberation of our country,” Tchiroma concludes.
